My nemesis… the Pileated Woodpecker. There are so many times that I hear them, see them but hardly ever good a good enough photograph until yesterday.

Pileated Woodpecker | Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve | Alice Mary Herden
For an article I am working on, I attended a talk at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve Education Center in Yankeetown. I arrived quite earlier so I would have time to explore the boardwalk and take some photographs. For two hours nothing, until 30 minutes before the talk, there it was.
Unfortunately, this was the only angle I could get due to the thick marsh after a couple of feet and reminding myself that I had to attend this talk and interview someone I had to hold back. But if that was not the case, I would have put my boots on and headed out as far as I could for a better angle.
As you can see it maybe carving out a newer cavity from the amount of debris flying. What an amazing and beautiful bird as well as my favorite woodpecker.
